Last Summer Green Things were Greener

Lightbox, digital print and bag of grass seeds

The Light box is a digitally altered image of a painting titled Boer War (1900 – 1901) by the artist Byam Shaw. In the original painting which is in Birmingham Museum and Art Galleries collection there is a women who is mourning the loss of her cousin who died in the Boer War in Africa. By digitally removed the women, we can instead focus on the vegetation and the plants and trees of a typical English landscape. The print behind the light box is a series of photographs where the artist has tried to identify the names of the plants in the painting. This work is interested in exploring the value of nature, the loss of natural habitats, and the environment in which we live.
