Mona Casey Curated Shows Artwork

Hypercoloration

2024, Mona Casey
Large digital print, projection
This work shows a billboard size digital image of a collection of different night skies. Images such as polystyrene balls and natural seed pods have been digitally added, in an attempt to query the proliferation and quantity of man-made materials which are in competition with organic live forms.  The projection shows a series of quotes, from the 19th Century Zoologist, Frank Evers Beddard book Animal Coloration (1892). The texts refer to Beddard’s writings about the color of animals and how their evolved markings assist them in hiding and merging with their habitats. The projection is made up of a sequence of choreographed found images of butterflies, animals, fish, etc. and shows how these creatures stand out against, or merge with, a backdrop of different colours. The work is influenced by the writings of Timothy Morton in their book Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (2013).
